Music Theory

As students progress from beginning to intermediate levels of playing, knowledge of music theory fosters better understanding of the repertoire, helps improve memorization, and leads to a more refined performance. In addition, theory exams are co-requisites for all RCM instrument and voice exams from Level 5 through ARCT and are required to receive RCM certificates and school credit.

Arbutus Music Academy offers music theory and history programs for students of all levels.

Weekly group programs begin in September and  January. For Summer intensive courses offered in July-August please visit our Summer Programs page.

A Preparatory Theory Program covering Levels Preparatory-5 is available to students without previous experience in theory. Programs for  Levels 6 through 8 can be completed in a single 18-week term, while programs for theory and history beyond Level 8 generally take two terms of study.

Small-group  classes  require a minimum of 4 students and are scheduled throughout the year.

Private and semi-private lessons are also offered to students throughout the academic year and can be started at any time.
